Storage units provide a safe and secure place to store furniture, but you also want to ensure the furniture does not endure any damage while packed away in the storage unit.

Learn about several methods used to protect furniture and prevent damage. When the time comes to retrieve your furniture, you will find the pieces in the same condition you left them.

1. Furniture Cover Bags

Protect furniture from damage and moisture with the use of sofa cover bags. The large plastic bags come in a variety of sizes to fit over furniture such as couches, chairs, and desks.

Wrap the bag over the furniture and seal the ends. Just before you seal the ends, push out any extra air to ensure the cover stays on tightly. The bag provides a tightly sealed fit to add protection to all elements of the furniture.

Seal off individual parts like couch cushions to provide extra protection. When you retrieve the furniture, open the bags and restore all the elements to their original state.

2. Furniture Leg Protections

The legs of furniture pieces are sensitive areas to consider as you place furniture in a storage unit. You want to protect the legs from scuffs, scratches, and cracks. Damage to legs could prevent furniture use in the future without major repairs or replacements.

Use protective flooring to provide a safe area for furniture to rest on. Workout mats provide a cushioned area so legs do not scuff or suffer damage when pulled across the floor. An old or cheap carpet also provides protection. If you have a tight budget, lay out cardboard boxes to protect furniture from the hard floors.

Along with the whole piece of furniture, consider wrapping each individual leg in some bubble wrap and tape. The bubble wrap should cover the bottom of the leg so all the elements are completely covered. Ensure the tape only covers the bubble wrap to prevent damage.

3. Wall Damage Protection

The walls of a storage unit often feature hard materials like brick or cement. When you push furniture up against the wall for storage, you do not want the materials to rip or shred. You also do not want furniture covers to rip or shred.

Before you move your furniture into the unit, hang up sheets, blankets, or small carpets against the walls. When you place furniture in the unit, the hung materials provide extra cushion and will prevent furniture damage. The extra cushion allows you to place furniture close against the wall and not waste any space within the storage unit.

4. Bigger Storage Units

One way to save space in a storage unit is by stacking items. You may be inclined to stack boxes and totes right on top of furniture to save space. Over time, the weight of the items could put wear and tear on the furniture. Springs may become worn and furniture seats may warp or change shape.

Before you stack furniture and other items, consider a bigger unit option for your items. With a larger unit, you will have the space needed to properly space out the furniture and prevent any damage.

The whole point of a storage unit is to provide you with the extra space so you do not have to cram and store items in your home. Budget out the price differences in a larger space. Storage unit workers will help you select a size based on the estimated number of furniture pieces you plan to store.
